Live to glorify Him in all you do! When you win a game, achieve an athletic goal, shine in a performance, or break a record, your natural response as a competitor is to want the credit and whatever reward is attached to that success. Another way you might describe it is “glory,” which can come in the form of recognition, renown, prestige, fame, or honor. There’s nothing inherently wrong in desiring good outcomes from your hard work. But if that's your number one goal as a competitor, it will never be as fulfilling as you hope it might be. You’ll always be tempted to chase your own glory if you don’t understand your true identity and purpose. Receiving glory in the form of honor, praise, admiration, or rewards will naturally happen throughout your athletic career. But it’s when you find yourself chasing glory that it becomes a problem. It puts you out of balance with God’s plan, which is to give Him all the glory for what He has done for you and through you.

“A sensible person sees danger and takes cover, but the inexperienced keep going and are punished.” – Proverbs 22:3 One of the most infamous mistakes in the history of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament was a timeout that should not have been called. Down only two points with 11 seconds left in the 1993 national championship game, Chris Webber of Michigan called a timeout. The problem was that Michigan had no timeouts to use. Michigan was charged with a technical foul, which gave North Carolina two free throws and possession of the ball. North Carolina won 77-71. We make mistakes. In sports, we may have something drilled into us in practice, yet we still forget in the heat of the battle. In our walks with the Lord, we drop the ball, too. We allow a temptation to play out or forget an important truth we learned. But we can limit our mistakes and keep a healthy relationship with God and others. Proverbs 22:3 says, “A sensible person sees danger and takes cover, but the inexperienced keep going and are punished.” As Christians, we must always keep our eyes open to things that will trip us up in our walk with the Lord. Whether it is an invitation to do something or go somewhere, the best thing is to pray and think through the action. Ask yourself, “What could happen if I did this?” “Is there a better option?” And always be in prayer when making choices. � We will never be perfect. But if we look ahead and “see the danger,” we can sidestep the mistakes that may cost us. Have you ever made a mistake in a game? What happened? What are ways you can make mistakes in walking with Jesus? What are some things you can do to not trip up? Would you like to learn more?

“‘What you’re doing is not good,’ Moses’s father-in-law said to him.” – Exodus 18:17 The documentary “The Redeem Team,” shows a domino effect of influence surrounding the 2008 Gold medal-winning USA Men’s Olympic basketball team. Almost the entire team had gone out to party after practice until nearly dawn. When they were returning to their rooms, they met the late Kobe Bryant on his way to work out. Instead of going out to party, Bryant had gone to his room and rested for an early start the next day. Bryant’s teammates thought he was crazy, but by the end of the week, the entire team followed his example. Everyone has influence. We may not be a Kobe, LeBron James or Carmelo Anthony, but how we live and play sports can be an example to others. When Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses, visited the Israelite camp after they left Egypt, he got a first-hand view of how things were run. Jethro saw Moses judging and settling disputes from sunup to sundown. Jethro was concerned and encouraged Moses to reorganize and put trusted men over smaller groups to handle minor disputes, and then the larger issues would come to Moses and the Lord. When Jethro saw that Moses would wear himself out doing things the old way, he used their relationship to guide him to a better plan. That is influence. Matthew 12:34 says, “For the mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart.” What is in us, who we truly are, is revealed in our words, attitude and behavior – and they impact others. Use your influence to help others and point to Jesus wherever possible. Who has had the greatest influence on you as an athlete? Who has had the greatest influence on you as a follower of Jesus? When you consider that you’re an influencer for Jesus, what goes through your mind?

God’s grace doesn’t just save - it transforms us. It teaches us to turn from sin and pursue holiness. In a world that promotes self-indulgence and a ‘me first mentality’, we are called to live differently. True obedience is not about striving but surrendering to God’s work in us. His grace gives us the strength to live with integrity and godliness. Let your life reflect His transforming power today.

Colossians 1:13-14 “For He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” Application: Salvation is not self-improvement - it is a divine rescue from darkness into Christ’s kingdom. As redeemed people, we no longer belong to sin but to God’s rule. This means we fight temptation not as slaves, but as those already set free. Our past no longer defines us, and neither does fear or shame. Today, walk in that freedom - make decisions, treat others, and pursue holiness as one who belongs fully to Christ.

James 1:12 “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.” Application: James 1:12 teaches that trials are not just obstacles but opportunities for spiritual formation. In the ancient world, crowns symbolized victory, and James uses this imagery to show that endurance in faith leads to eternal reward. For early Christians facing persecution, this was a radical encouragement—their suffering was not in vain. Today, we often view hardship as something to avoid, but James calls us to see it as a path to maturity. Rather than just enduring, we are being refined into people who reflect God’s character. This week, when facing difficulties, pause and ask: how might God be strengthening my faith through this?
